A Valentine for My Grandson

If I had held you in my arms and tried to soothe your cries
when you were but a babe a few days old...

If I had held onto your hands and helped you learn to walk
when you were stumbling but so very bold...

If I had helped you choose and place that first crayon to paper,
watching as you drew that first bright hue...

If I had hugged you close and tight when first you scraped your knee
and kissed it better as some grandmas do...

Would any of these precious things make you more my very own
or more the son my son would call his child?

No, God decided long ago which family you should be in,
and guess who headed the list that He compiled?!

He could not have made a finer boy to be my only grandson,
the one to whom I give my love replete.

He blessed us with your mother and He blessed us with her son
for without you both we'd be so incomplete!
