Leaves Are Falling

Red and green, yellow and brown,
leaves are falling on my side of town.
An early autumn?  Who can say,
but a welcome sight along the way.
Summer's heat has held us captive,
made us slugs, slow and inactive.
My heart longs to be outside,
to take a walk or take a ride,
to hear the music of a thousand crickets
strumming their songs from roadside thickets,
to watch for children's sidewalk chalk
and hop-scotch along as I take my walk.
The "twit" of redbirds in the trees,
Nature's beauty, wild and free.
The weather's changing everywhere.
A breeze is blowing through my hair.
Leaves are falling on my side of town,
red and green, yellow and brown.
